Great Swim disappointment highlights need to Love Your Lakes

Thousands of swimmers who should have been cleaving their way through the sunlit waters of Windermere this weekend have been left cursing the appearance of blue-green algae in the lake which forced organisers to postpone the hugely successful Great North Swim event.

However, the untimely appearance of the algae has allowed a local conservation charity to highlight the message of its ‘Love Your Lakes’ campaign.

Grants awarded for conservation projects

orton wood resizedTwice a year Nurture Lakeland is pleased to be able to give away some of its money to several very deserving conservation projects in Cumbria.

This summer grants have been awarded to Wendy’s Wood in Glenridding, Orton Community Woodland, SusKes, Kirkby Stephen Riverside Walk and Appleby Riverside Walk.

We were very pleased to have so many fantastic projects to consider in this round of applications. The variety of conservation projects throughout the county is really encouraging!

Crumbs! What a tasty way to save the environment

One of Cumbria’s oldest food producers is urging visitors to the Lake District to ‘go green’ by eating a tasty residue of its traditional baking process.

The 156-year-old Grasmere Gingerbread Shop is selling bags of its sought-after gingerbread crumbs to raise money for conservation projects.

Entitled ‘Leave No Crumbs’, the campaign is designed to raise thousands of pounds for charity Nurture Lakeland over the next few years.

Hotel landmark at Red Screes

English Lakes Hotels are approaching a major landmark in perhaps the most unusual and little known aspect of their business: conservation.

The successful hotel group of six hotels are about to hit the £100,000 mark in their fundraising for conservation projects throughout the Lake District and Cumbria.

Projects such as Barkbooth Lot, Warton Crag, Cumbria Outdoors Sustainability Programme and Fix the Fells have benefited from the support of English Lakes Hotels over the past 15 years.
