Grizedale Red Kites Featured
Red Kites were wiped out almost completely in the UK by 1900. But over the last 100 years Red Kite populations have improved following reintroduction projects in Wales, Yorkshire, North East England and South West Scotland. However, natural range expansion by Red Kites is restricted so the Forestry commission is undertaking a Red Kite reintroduction programme in Grizedale Forest.
90 Red Kites will be gradually released in Grizedale over 3 years. These birds will be monitored and supported, and it is hoped that a viable Red Kite population will be established in Grizedale by 2015.
This population will link with other nearby poulations, creating a continuous geographic range for Red Kites in the UK. The local community will be involved in the project, which will also provide educational opportunities for residents and visitors to the area.
