Cumbria Outdoors John Muir Award Featured
The John Muir project is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It encourages awareness and responsibility for the natural environment through four challenges. The award is fun and in the spirit of adventure. The award will be done with young people aged 7-19. The award is needed to raise awareness of the importance of conserving wild places and helping the young people take personal responsibility for their actions on the environment. The project will provide an opportunity to improve the local community whilst also exploring wild places across Cumbria that they would not ordinarily have the opportunity to access due to poverty in the area.
The project will have a positive impact through the transformation of the landscape at Currock Community Centre. The character of the concrete and unused area will be transformed into raised flower beds, vegetable patches. Habitats and food sources will be provided through the installation of bird boxes, bird feeders and insect ‘hotels’ all created through recycling existing materials or using natural resources. The garden will also produce vegetables and herbs for the young people to use in cooking lessons within the youth group.
