Dufton Ghyll Wood Featured
Dufton Ghyll is a 25 acre area of semi natural ancient woodland near Appleby, managed by the Woodland Trust. The wood was designated as being ‘rich in geology’ due to exposures of St Bees sandstone. Mill Beck which flows through the wood is home to salmon, lampreys crayfish and healthy populations of otters and river birds. The Woodland Trust are working to maintain and improve the biodiversity of the wood by selectively felling non-native tree species to allow native species to flourish, particularly along the edge of the beck. They have also replaced much of the boundary fencing along the north of the site, in order to protect naturally regenerating new shoots from browsing by rabbits and deer.
Over the next year footpaths will be improved to allow better access and increase people’s enjoyment and understanding of this wood.
