Environmental Quality Marks - Opinions Please!
An environmental quality mark (EQM) is a branded identity which shows to the consumer that certain environmental criteria are being met by a business. Some examples of EQMs are the Green Tourism Business Scheme and Cumbria's own Green At Heart, but there are many more. Here at Nurture Lakeland we've been getting to grips with EQMs and thinking about their role in sustainable tourism in Cumbria. We've trawled through many reports and datasets from all over the world.
And we've found some interesting results...
... We found that working towards an EQM doesn't just benefit the environment. It results in satisfied customers, happy staff and a great business network. And there is an overall financial benefit to businesses too.
But there is one thing we are struggling to find out. Why do so few businesses here in Cumbria have an EQM - even though so many are doing great things for sustainable tourism?
We know that our destination is special - we have unique small businesses and a great natural environment - and that's part of the appeal that keeps visitors coming back again and again. So do we need a special EQM for Cumbria? Or do we need a bit of help working with the existing EQMs? Or is there something else we haven't thought of?
We set up an online survey to find out what you think about EQMs, whether you have one or not. We've had a great response rate so far and your answers will help us get to the bottom of some facts and myths about EQMs.
One interesting finding so far is that 60% of the businesses without an EQM thought that the EQM is a financial disadvantage because "it wastes time". However only 10% of businesses with an EQM would agree with this statement!
The more replies we have, the better the service we can provide to you, because we can meet the needs of different business types or sizes – we know you are not all hotels!
The survey will close on Friday 16th August 2013 so please use the online survey to send us your views!
