Opt-in to help out
A new agreement between Nurture Lakeland and online booking sites Go Lakes and Guest Link, will help to raise money for Cumbria flood damage repairs.
Accommodation providers who advertise on the sites will be able to invite their guests to ‘opt-in’ to make a donation towards the Flood Appeal as part of their online booking. As many businesses as possible are encouraged to add the facility to their listing and help out.
Since the floods in November, Cumbrian businesses have bounced back with the message ‘business as usual’. However, some areas of our countryside, including popular rights of way, have been badly damaged. An initial work programme is taking place to repair or replace the most urgent damage to 194 bridges, 68 paths, and 57 gates or stiles along with the huge quantities of debris and stone deposited by the flood waters across the National Park and Cumbria. Areas such as the Western shore of Windermere and Scarth Gap in Buttermere have seen damage that could take months to repair.

Nurture Lakeland, a local conservation charity, has set up the fundraising scheme with Cumbria Tourism to help support this cleanup work. Nurture (formerly the Tourism and Conservation Partnership) specializes in setting up ‘visitor payback schemes’, linking tourism businesses and their customers with local conservation projects.
Tiffany Solender, Corporate Fundraiser for Nurture Lakeland, had this to say: “The Lake District and Cumbria has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world – that’s what attracts over 12 million visitors to the area each year. We wanted to give those people an opportunity to ‘give something back’ to the places they love and help restore our precious landscape. Every donation we receive really does make a difference. Whatever amount you can give, it will be used to help protect this beautiful landscape for future generations.”
Every now and again our beautiful landscapes need a little help from their friends. You can help with this work by making your donation when booking your accommodation online through www.golakes.co.uk.
